5 Makeup Essentials Every Gal Should Carry

I'm often asked what type of products I keep in my makeup bag on the regular — and my answer is always the same: multi-purpose ones. Since no two days are the same, my beauty needs/looks vary and it's not realistic to constantly refill what I have in my bag. So, I keep it simple with things that could be used in a multitude of different ways.

Here's the five products I can't live without — they're versatile, easy to shop for and things I think every gal should have on hand:

A Universally Flattering Lip: Have something with you that can take you from day-to-night in a matter of minutes. I'm fond of YSL's Lip Oils — one coat gives a natural flush, several results in a more bold look. It stains the lips a bit as well, so you won't constantly have to apply. I also use it as a cheek stain in a pinch.

Concealer: Opt for something that could work as foundation when you need it to. I can't live without my RMS concealer, it's been a staple in my makeup bag for years now. Sheer it out with a Beauty Blender for all over coverage, or simply stipple it onto the face where needed. It's natural, wears well and is one of my favorite formulations, hands down.

Brows: Brows are essential no matter what type of look you're going for. I'm more of a brow pencil gal myself, especially when the pencil has a brow brush at the end of it (Anastasia is a fave) — you can use it to comb out or curl the eyelashes on-the-go.

Mascara: Whether it be one coat or several, mascara always transforms the eye. I opt for black and recommend you do, too (unless you're going for a more natural look. In that case, brown). It awakens, defines, and compliments any eye color. Carry a small, angled brush with you and apply the mascara as eyeliner when need be.

Bronzer: In a pinch, bronzer can become the most universal product in your makeup arsenal. Use it to warm up the face, as eyeshadow, to contour and to subtly fill in the brows. Just be sure to select a product that's more on the matte side, as a shimmer just won't provide you with the same versatility.
