4 Flattering Makeup Tricks to Try

The general consensus in beauty is that we all want to find products that flatter, right? Where that gets complicated is in the attempt to navigate what sort of products and techniques will do just that, flatter you. Through my years in beauty, I've found a few universal tricks that work for every type person:

Add Bronzer to the Eyes: Just as bronzer gives a natural warmth to the face, applying a bit around the eye crease gives the same result. I do this after priming the eye, but before any eyeshadow. It ties together any colors your applying, minimizing potential lines of demarcation. It's also a great trick to trick if you're going for a more natural look, too. Providing the warmth without the look of an overdone eye.

A Pop of Color on the Cheeks: You know the old trick of giving cheeks and lips a quick pinch before being seen in public? The technique always made sense to me — a natural flush awakens the face. But if you're not down for some self-inflicted pain, I suggest applying a cream-based blush to those areas instead. Cream over powder, always, as I feel it gives a more natural, stained-type look to the face. Powder blush tends to wear rather quickly, too.

Frame the Face: Years ago, I had the pleasure of interviewing Anastasia Soare (the queen of eyebrows) and it was one of the most insightful conversations about beauty I've ever had. Anastasia has always taken an architectural approach to eyebrows, believing that our facial structure is brought out when we have brows that are best suited for our face.

Take a few minutes out of your day and fill in the brows with either a pencil or powder (whatever you use is totally up to you, I like either or). It's incredible how a subtle brow can bring out your facial features. If you're unsure how to fill them or what type of brow shape is best for you, I recommend getting professionally waxed (at least once) by someone who knows a thing or two about brows. Email me if you're unsure and I'll help you/recommend someone in your area.

Don't Forget to Glow: There's nothing I love more than a "lit from within" look. I wouldn't categorize it as highlighting, and I definitely wouldn't refer to it as strobing. It's more about a subtle glow that can be achieved through great skincare (first and foremost) and a fantastic setting spray. Antioxidant-rich serums, hydrating creams are a must in this case. Spray's will reset makeup, reactivate the ingredients, and keep you looking fresh and dewy through your day.
