Have you ever heard of dry brushing? Though the technique has been around for ages, it's a recently trending topic in the beauty industry — especially when it comes to addressing dry skin prevention this winter.

Initially, I had learned about dry brushing through a friend, who had begun doing it before every shower and was amazed at the benefit — seeing improvements in her muscle tone, energy levels, and overall digestive health. I purchased a body brush immediately after our conversation and have been hooked ever since.

So, what are the benefits exactly? Here's the breakdown:

  • Improves circulation
  • Strengthens the immune system
  • Tones the muscles
  • Removes dead, dry skin cells
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system, removing toxins from the body
  • Reduces cellulite

How to Dry Brush:

It's recommended to do it in stages, beginning with the feet and moving upwards from there. Be sure to use gentle, long strokes and making sure your always moving towards the heart — avoiding any circular or back and fourth motion.

I enjoy dry brushing right before a shower, as it washes off all those dead, dry skin cells left behind. As for how often: once a day is enough for me, though it's safe to do twice a day.

Choosing a Brush:

I had found a great brush (pictured above) at my local TJ Maxx. Thinking the longer handle would benefit for those hard-to-reach areas. Though I must say, when it comes to efficiency — I believe a shorter handled brush may have been the way to go. I find myself constantly clutching the actual head of the brush, rather than the handle as it feels more controlled. The Polishing Body Brush by Aromatherapy Associates seems like a great option, and something I'll definitely be buying when my current brush wears down.

Do you dry brush? If so, what are your thoughts on it — love or hate it?
